How to perform modified Stillman’s Method of Tooth Brushing –

• Soft/ medium multi tufted brush should be placed with the bristles ends resting partly on the cervical portions of the teeth & partially on the adjacent gingiva.


• Brush head is pointed towards root /apical , directed in oblique angle to the long Axis of the of the tooth.
• Pressure is applied laterally against the Gingival margin to produce perceptible blanching.


• Brush is activated with 20 short back – forth stroke & is simultaneously moved in coronal ( towards tooth ) direction along the attached gingiva, gingival margin & tooth surface.


• This process is repeated on all teeth.
• Lingual surface of Maxillary (upper) & Mandibular (lower )teeth –
— Handle of the brush held in vertical position, engaging heel of the brush.


• With this technique sides rather than ends of the bristles are used.
• Penetration into gingival sulci avoided.

Recommended for cleaning areas with progressing gingival recession.
Root exposure to prevent aggressive tissue destruction

Stillman’s method of tooth brushing :


Bristles are placed 45 degree angle with the bristles placed partly on the gingiva & partially on the cervical portions of the teeth.


Once the bristles are in place , pressure is applied to blanch the gingiva & gentle but firm vibratory rotatory motion is applied to the brush with the bristles remaining in the same position.
